PATRICK WAYNE MUMFORD

PATRICK WAYNE MUMFORD, a native of New Bern, North Carolina, graduated from East Carolina University in 1966 with a major in history and a minor in political science. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force and spent four years in the Strategic Air Command missile combat force, serving as the youngest missile combat crew commander in the USAF at that time. In 1970 Wayne entered the University of Tennessee College of Law. As a third year law student, he clerked for the City of Knoxville Law Department and became a city staff attorney immediately upon graduation and passing the Tennessee Bar. Wayne also served as a staff judge advocate in the Air Force Reserves for six years. From the city attorney's office Wayne went to work in the title insurance industry. He served as vice president, state manager, and finally as president of the title insurance company.

After seven years in the title insurance industry, Wayne entered private practice with a firm in Raleigh, North Carolina. He opened that firm's Myrtle Beach office in 1985. When an opportunity arose to work in the real estate development business he served as President and Chief Counsel for a residential golf course community company. In 1989, Patrick W. Mumford (was licensed in SC, NC & TN) and Luther McCutchen formed McCutchen & Mumford, P.A., now known as McCutchen, Mumford, Vaught & Geddie, P.A. Wayne's law practice was concentrated in timeshare, real estate and business law. He also is an active speaker, has written and taught nine courses, and is the author of three books. Wayne also enjoys being a general aviation pilot.

Wayne is now a retired attorney and an experience mediator in North Carolina and South Carolina. He received his initial Mediator Training from United States Arbitration & Mediation of the Carolinas, Inc. in 1989. He actively mediated civil litigation cases in South Carolina and North Carolina, beginning in 1989. In 1992, he co-founded Carolina Dispute Resolution, Inc. and, in addition to mediating cases, also recruited and trained Attorney Mediators. In May 1992, he attended a 40-hour training course in Wilmington, North Carolina taught by Dispute Management, Inc. He was certified in 1992 as a Mediator by the North Carolina Supreme Court pursuant to its Pilot Mediation Program. In 1992, he became a member of South Carolina Council for Mediation and Dispute Resolution and also member of Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee of South Carolina Bar- served for several years (was there when South Carolina Supreme Court adopted its Mediation Rules). In 1992, he was approved as a Mediator with American Arbitration Association. He has been a South Carolina Bar Certified Mediator for many years.

Mr. Mumford developed a course approved by the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation entitled "Mediation for Realtors," which he taught throughout South Carolina. He also developed a training course for Realtors to serve as local Mediators in local Real Estate Board disputes.

Mr. Mumford mediates in the areas of real estate disputes, probate/estate disputes, and contracts/transactional disputes.
